K-Cube in Workshops

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Workshop on Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) held on the 1st of September 2022, 7th of December 2022, and 2nd May 2023, as part of the research seminar and workshop series on the development of Virtual Reality Systems. Dr. Peter Ng presented the significance of the Metaverse and Blockchain technologies in VR systems on Tuesday, 2nd of May 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Dr. Peter Ng emphasized the need for the fundamental knowledge required to understand the structure of the Metaverse and its components including the computing infrastructure, human interface, decentralization, spatial computing, content delivery, discovery and user experience. The Metaverse has potential applications in teaching by creating immersive and engaging learning experiences that simulate real-world scenarios or fantasy worlds. For example, students could explore historical periods, scientific phenomena, or fictional stories in a virtual setting that feels authentic and interactive.

The Metaverse enables collaborative and creative projects that transcend physical and temporal boundaries. For example, students could work on a joint assignment with peers from different locations, cultures, or time zones, or create their own content such as games, animations, or music in a virtual studio. In the Metaverse we can provide personalized and adaptive learning paths that cater to each student's needs, preferences, and goals. For example, students could choose their own pace, topics, and feedback options, or receive tailored guidance and support from teachers or AI assistants. The Metaverse environment also fosters social and emotional skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork in a safe and controlled environment. For example, students could practice conversations, role-plays, or debates with avatars or peers that represent diverse perspectives and backgrounds, or join clubs, events, or activities that interest them and connect them with others.
